Newman Named to NFCA All-America First Team

She is the Drake and the MVC all-time career strikeouts leader with 1,223, a total that is tops among active NCAA players. She is also Drake’s all-time wins leader with 93, a total that ranks second all-time in the MVC. Newman, who is a four-time NFCA All-Region selection, ended her Drake career as the most decorated and successful pitcher in program history. She is just the second MVC player to be selected the MVC Pitcher of the Year three times along with being tabbed to the All-MVC First Team four times. OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. – Redshirt senior pitcher Nicole Newman (Madison, Wis.) of the Drake University softball team was named to the 2019 National Fastpitch Coaches Association All-America First Team as an at-large pitcher selection, the NFCA announced this afternoon at its NCAA Women’s Softball College World Series press conference. Her 13 shutouts rank second in the nation. Her 29 wins this season are a program-record. This season, Newman had five perfect games (Division I single season record) and two no-hitters. She won 10 MVC Pitcher of the Week awards this season and a league-record 23 overall.center_img Newman, who this season was named one of ten finalists for the USA Softball Collegiate Player of the Year award, went 29-7 with a 1.07 earned run average and a nation-leading 423 strikeouts, a total that is the best single-season total ever at Drake and in the MVC. Currently, she leads the country in strikeouts per seven innings at 13.4, hits allowed per seven innings at 2.68 and strikeout-to-walk ratio of 9.40 while her ERA ranks fifth. Newman, who became Drake’s first-ever NFCA All-American last season with her third-team selection, is just the second-ever NFCA First Team All-American in the Missouri Valley Conference and the first since the 2002 (Lindsay Wood, UNI). Newman and her teammates finished with a 43-16 overall record and swept the MVC regular season and tournament titles for the second-straight season, a feat that had never before been accomplished in the MVC.
