Photo credit: glas.netGEORGETOWN, Guyana — Suriname’s Minister of Home Affairs Soewarto Moestadja will be delivering the main address at the Caribbean Artists Uniting against Gender Based Violence, which is being held in Paramaribo, Suriname on 18 to 20 July 2011.CARICOM gender advocate, Dr Rosina Wiltshire and communication specialist at UN Women Sharon Carter-Burke, will also address the opening ceremony. Organised by the CARICOM Secretariat with funding from UN Women, the three-day workshop will serve to sensitize young and upcoming artists to the issue of gender based violence (GBV) in the region, and develop their skills in the use of edutainment for public education. The workshop seeks to realize two major objectives: to increase knowledge on GBV and the ability to take culturally sensitive action to reduce GBV in general and increase awareness on the positive impact of edutainment addressing GBV and related issues through the active engagement of Caribbean performing artists in the delivery of creative products addressing GBV.Fifteen artistes drawn from Belize, Guyana and Suriname will have an opportunity to exchange views with specialists in gender, media and edutainment and determine an artistic approach to raising awareness on GBV.Through this workshop, artists can become change agents and contribute to a gender sensitive Community and promote positive messages through their artistic expressions. A special dimension given to this workshop is the fusion of indigenous art forms with popular cultural expressions in the creation of public education products. It is anticipated that at the end of the three days, participants in the workshop would have produced public education campaign materials such as public service advertisements (PSAs) and jingles which speak out against gender-based violence. The workshop will be facilitated by consultants who are experts in the field of gender and musical productions. The local organising team comprises officials from the Ministry of Home Affairs, responsible for gender affairs, and the Ministry of Education and Community Development, Directorate of Culture.Caribbean News Nowlast_img read more

Canizares leads the way in Dubai

| bapwcwvsr

first_imgSpain’s Alejandro Canizares claimed the lead after a first round of the DP World Tour Championship that did little to change the battle to end the season as European number one. Press Association Playing partner Justin Rose, who needs to finish fifth or better, carded a two-under-par 70, while third-placed Graeme McDowell returned a 72 and fourth-placed Ian Poulter a 69. “It has been a lot of hard work all season and I just let my focus slip on the last,” said Stenson, who is looking to become the first player to win the PGA Tour’s FedEx Cup and Race to Dubai in the same year. “That sucks, but I am still in good shape and playing nicely. The guys are running on fumes so everybody is looking forward to getting done. “You can’t win a tournament on Thursday but you can certainly play your way out of it. I would have taken four under at the start of the day so I just have to let the disappointment of the last slip away.” Poulter believes he is playing the best golf of his career after finishes of 15th, second and fifth in the first three events of the inaugural Final Series, results which have given him a chance of overhauling Stenson and collecting on a 100 dollar bet, at 10/1, with his rival and neighbour in Lake Nona in Orlando. The Ryder Cup star carded four birdies and one bogey in his opening 69, but was frustrated at missing a number of chances to be higher up the leaderboard. “I am annoyed,” Poulter said. “I made two putts which were outside birdie chances and took a couple more but the rest were missed. I am frustrated but happy to be only three behind (the lead). “I need to continue to be aggressive and see if I can nick it at the end. It’s a good mix to be really angry being three under par and still being in there for the next three days.” Rose proved Stenson’s point about the players “running on fumes”, the US Open champion revealing he is suffering from an inflamed shoulder that required an MRI scan recently. But the 33-year-old is happy to have control of his destiny, with a victory here giving him a second money list title – he won it in 2007 – regardless of other results. “Henrik is making it hard for the rest of us but that’s why I wanted it in my own hands and that’s still the case, so my goal remains the same for the rest of the week,” Rose said. McDowell was happy to get himself back into contention, the Northern Irishman lying three over par after 13 holes before rolling in a hat-trick of birdies from the 14th. The former US Open champion is not a fan of the grainy greens on the Earth Course, adding: “‘Here we go again’ crossed my mind on the front nine because these greens have got in my head in the past. “But my game is in good shape and I committed to not reacting to what happened. They are tough greens to read and I have to accept that and move on. You can’t win it today but I could easily have blown myself out of it.” Canizares carded seven birdies and one bogey in his 66 before revealing his relief at being in Dubai at all after problems with his girlfriend’s visa. “My girlfriend is from the Czech Republic and I always forget she doesn’t have a Spanish passport and needs a visa,” Canizares explained. “I only remembered when we got to the check-in desk at the airport in Turkey on Sunday evening and handed over the passports. “Fortunately we had help from a lot of people and the tournament director Nick Tarrat was waiting with Dubai’s captain of immigration when we got to Dubai at 3am on Monday morning.” Former world number one Rory McIlroy had to settle for a one-under 71 after being three under for his first four holes, but the 24-year-old could at least report better news in terms of his focus on the course. “It’s much better than it has been the last few months and I am playing better, which is important,” said McIlroy, who admitted to being distracted by a legal dispute with his former management company and rumours of a split from tennis star girlfriend Caroline Wozniacki, who was watching him here. “It’s good that the game is back on track. I have this event and two more so it would be great to get a win before the end of the season.” Canizares completed a six-under-par 66 at Jumeirah Golf Estates to lead by one from Thailand’s Kiradech Aphibarnrat and Australia’s Marcus Fraser, with Race to Dubai leader Henrik Stenson a shot further back alongside Jamie Donaldson and Rafael Cabrera-Bello. Stenson admitted he lost focus to three-putt the 18th for his only bogey of the day, but did enough to suggest his nearest challengers for the money list title will be hard pressed to overhaul him despite continuing to battle a wrist injury. last_img read more

Pellegrini: ‘Ambitious mind’ is key

| bapwcwvsr

first_img Press Association One of his chief complaints appears to be that he felt senior figures at the club failed to acknowledge his birthday during last week’s post-season trip to Abu Dhabi. Toure’s stock is presently high after an outstanding 2013-14 season, in which he scored 24 goals in all competitions, including 20 in the league and a superb strike in the League Cup final. City have not commented on the situation but with the player having signed a new four-year contract just 13 months ago, their position is one of strength. It also comes just over a week after Toure addressed the crowd gathered for City’s open-top bus parade of Manchester and spoke of his ambitions for the club next season. The Ivory Coast international, speaking on May 12, a day before his 31st birthday, said: “We are looking for (more). We have the team and we have the manager. “This (next) year is going to be tough, we know that, but with the team we have we can do it. We expect a lot, the fans expect a lot as well. We can do it again, we can win it.” Pellegrini has similar aims. The former Malaga boss enjoyed a superb first season in charge, winning two trophies and even sustaining a push for four into the second half of the campaign. Asked about his targets for next year, Pellegrini said: “Exactly the same as this season. “We are the team that played longer in all the competitions. For me the four competitions are important. “We must play in the Champions League, and in the Premier League and in the cups with our squad, with rotation, because you cannot play with players every game and you cannot prioritise one competition.” Pellegrini now intends to enjoy a summer holiday but admits it will be hard to detach himself from his preparations for next season. The 60-year-old said: “When you win the title it is very easy to enjoy the holiday, (but) also it is very difficult to disconnect absolutely, you cannot do it. “I hope we can prepare (for) the next season with (director of football) Txiki Begiristain, with the owner and the president in the same way we did this year.” The newly-crowned Barclays Premier League champions must limit their spending to a net £49million as punishment for breaching UEFA’s financial fair play regulations. But City, who also won the Capital One Cup last season, have already insisted the European governing body’s sanctions will not have any “material impact” on their planned transfer activity ahead of next term. So although any spending would have to total considerably less than last year’s £90million outlay, Pellegrini is still hopeful of securing top targets. Asked if changes were likely, the Chilean told City TV: “Maybe. We are going to see which is the best way to improve. “I think one of the most important things for me is to have an ambitious mind. “It is very important to win the title but these two titles will not be useful the next year. “We must analyse all the good things we did, all the bad things, where we must improve, which is the best way to do it. We have a lot of work (to do).” Pellegrini’s remarks come after chairman Khaldoon Al Mubarak promised that any transfer activity this summer would be swift and decisive. One issue likely to be exercising the minds of officials at the Etihad Stadium is the extraordinary comments of key midfielder Yaya Toure and his agent this week. Toure has indicated that he is unhappy at the club because he feels under-appreciated and disrespected. Manchester City manager Manuel Pellegrini has promised the club will be ambitious if they decide to strengthen their squad this summer.last_img read more
