Don’t know why they didn’t pick me for Cup: Shoaib Malik

| qyzwltqwg

first_imgFormer Pakistan skipper Shoaib Malik, who has been ignored for the 2011 World Cup preliminary squad, has made it clear that his career is far from over and promised to soon make a comeback to international cricket. “It is hugely disappointing not to be selected in the World Cup squad and what is more strange is that neither the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) nor the national selectors have given any reason for ignoring me,” Malik said. The selectors yesterday did not pick the experienced allrounder in the 30-member preliminary squad and the board just stated that Malik was not cleared for selection.Shoaib Malik”I was mentally prepared to be selected as I am in good form and am performing well in the domestic cricket. But I don’t know why they didn’t pick me.”Missing the World Cup is a big setback for me but my career is certainly not over and I can still continue to play for another five to six years, so I know that I can make a comeback,” he added. However, Pakistani newspaper Dawn on Wednesday carried a story that said that Malik was not picked because he could not explain the presence of 90,000 pounds in his bank account in the UK to the integrity committee of the board.”Malik was unable to explain from where the money came from, its source and how it was in his account. That was the reason why he was not cleared for selection,” the report said. The PCB integrity committee had inquired into the assets, bank accounts and sources of income of Malik, Kamran Akmal, Danish Kaneria and Rana Naved in the lead up to the World Cup selection. It also sought advice of International Cricket Council (ICC) till the last moment before considering Kamran and Rana for selection, while ignoring Malik and Kaneria.advertisementMalik, who led Pakistan between 2007 and 2009 also clarified that he had no dispute or differences with any player in the national team and was ready to play under anyone’s captaincy.”I am ready to play under any captain and offer him full support. The impression that I am an intriguer is not right.”Malik said he would continue to play domestic cricket and wait for his time to make a comeback.Meanwhile, the former Pakistan captain Aamir Sohail said that if the board had functioned properly in the past, there would never have been any need for an integrity committee to keep a check on the players.”But anyway the good thing is that the selectors have picked the right mix of experienced and youth in the World Cup preliminary squad, because in such a big tournament you need seniors to lead the way,” Sohail added. He, however, criticised the selection of Yasir Arafat in the World Cup preliminary squad, pointing out that he had already been given lot of chances in the past and had failed to capitalise on them.- With PTI inputslast_img read more

1999 Cup: The beginning of Aussie dominance

| wezowzwms

first_imgAustralian players celebrate with the 1999 World Cup at Lord’s.No one will ever know if Australia would have had the same domination over world cricket in the 50-over format of the game had South Africa’s Herschelle Gibbs not dropped Australia captain Steve Waugh – in an effort to celebrate – at Headingley in the final super-six encounter of the 1999 World Cup on June 13.Australia are yet to lose a match in the showpiece event since that fateful match – having remained unbeaten in 2003 and 2007.With Waugh’s tactical acumen being questioned by all and sundry after a sloppy start to the tournament – beaten by Pakistan and New Zealand in the group stages – the win against South Africa was a must if Australia had to clinch a semi- final spot and Waugh led from the front, scoring an unbeaten 120 as Australia came from behind to eclipse South Africa’s total of 271 and fix up a semi- final date with the same opposition.Back to the home of cricket after a gap of 16 years, the oneday format had undergone a sea of change since the last time when the World Cup was held in England in 1983.While white balls had replaced the red ones, the 60- over game had been curtailed to 50- over a side and the traditional whites had been outdone by the coloured clothing. But the conditions hadn’t changed much and while Sri Lanka’s Sanath Jayasuriya had a gala time bulldozing each and every bowler in sight in the 1996 edition, he had a tough time in overcast and bowler friendly English wickets. Jayasuriya managed a mere 82 runs from five matches compared to the 221 runs he had scored in six matches in the 1996 edition. He more or less summed up Sri Lanka’s state of affair as the defending champions managed to win only against minnows Kenya and Zimbabwe.Zimbabwe were the surprise package as the team rode on the broad shoulders of all- rounder Neil Johnson, Andy Flower, Health Streak and Henry Olonga among others to create a stir with their performances in the group stages. If Olonga starred in the three run win over India, Johnson helped beat South Africa. While Zimbabwe were the surprise package, Bangladesh’s victory over Pakistan was a case of the 1992 winners taking the minnows too lightly. If choking is an art, South Africa definitely mastered it by first throwing away their match against Australia in the last super- six encounter from a position of strength and then snatching defeat from the jaws of victory in the semi- final against the same opposition.Sadly, Lance Klusener’s heroics in the World Cup – 281 runs in nine matches at an average of 140.50 and 17 wickets at an average of 20.58 – ended with a mixup that saw Klusener standing with a dejected look as Adam Gilchrist ran Allan Donald out.Although the match ended in a tie, the Proteas went out of the tournament due to their defeat against the same opposition in the group stage. While Klusener’s heroics earned him the man of the tournament award, one man who used the biggest stage of the 50- over format to evolve as an ODI player and silence his critics was India’s Rahul Dravid.Till then considered to be a misfit in the shorter version of the game, he grabbed the opportunity with both hands to not only amass 461 runs in eight matches at an average of 65.85, but also put on a record partnership of 318 for the second wicket with Sourav Ganguly against Sri Lanka on an overcast day at Taunton – undoubtedly India’s most dominant show in the edition. While Dravid smashed them to all corners of the ground, Ganguly kept coming down the track to heave the likes of Jayasuriya and Muttiah Muralitharan beyond the mid- wicket stand. If Dravid paced his innings to perfection, getting to his century at run- a- ball, Ganguly scored his century off 119 balls before tearing into the Lankans, scoring the next 83 runs off just 39 balls. While West Indies failed to create much of an impact, Geoff Allott from New Zealand forced the opposition batsmen to sit up and take notice as he scalped 20 wickets in nine matches at an average of 16.25 to become the World Cup’s joint highest wicket-taker.Pakistan kept their own pace and quietly made it to the final and were up against Australia – a team they had beaten by 10 runs in the group stages. But the final was a onesided affair as Pakistan folded up for 132 with Shane Warne running through the Pakistan middle-order. Australia won by eight wickets.Soon after the World Cup, the match-fixing scandal broke out and saw end of many decorated careers – Hansie Cronje and Ajay Jadeja among others – and an overall change in the way ICC viewed players’ interaction with the media and general public.advertisementadvertisementlast_img read more

Suresh Kalmadi: Exit in slow motion

| dhbjnujjr

first_imgA slow-moving file travelling between four government departments delayed the removal of Suresh Kalmadi from his position as chairman of the Commonwealth Games Organising Committee (OC).The CBI requested the cabinet secretary to remove Kalmadi and General Secretary Lalit Bhanot from the OC in the second week of December. The proposal was then referred to the Sports Ministry under M.S. Gill, which then forwarded it to the Law Ministry. The Law Ministry sent it to the Attorney General who finally cleared the sacking. The decision was announced by the new Sports Minister, Ajay Maken, less than a week after he took over.Suresh KalmadiThe move to sack the only two remaining key functionaries of the now-disbanded organising committee comes nearly three months after the conclusion of the scam-tainted Games and two months after the CBI took over the probe. The investigation agency, which has filed three FIRs related to irregularities in the Games, says Kalmadi and Bhanot were actively stalling the probe by “intimidating witnesses” and “interfering in the investigation”.”Following the CBI’s request, we got a legal opinion from the Attorney General and took this step,” Maken said. The CWG stain seems to have spread globally too. On a visit to Australia, Foreign Minister S.M. Krishna was virtually ambushed by contractors who had not been paid their CWG dues amounting to several million dollars.Maken has laid down a January 31 deadline for 45 outstanding payments to be made. “When verification of the works is being carried out and legitimate payments are to be made, we can’t have such people in the oc against whom the CBI has made such strong charges,” he said.advertisementKalmadi says Maken’s order is “illegal and arbitrary”. It may have been an attempt at protecting his appointment as president of the Indian Olympic Association (IOA), virtually the supreme commander of all Indian sporting federations. Maken has, however, clarified Kalmadi’s sacking would not interfere with his role in the IOA. A reassurance for Kalmadi perhaps, but not for Indian sport.last_img read more

Martin reveals Dravid connection in cricketing rise

| rcbmppzoy

first_imgWest Indies leg-spinner Anthony Martin, who produced a career-best spell in his team’s win over India in the fourth ODI, said bowling to Rahul Dravid five years ago led him to believe that he could have a career in international cricket.West Indies bowler Anthony Martin celebrates his team’s victory over India. AP”There was this practice game against India in 2006. Dravid hit my first ball for a four and was gone off the second, caught in the slips,” remembers the leg-spinner whose 4/36 led to India’s 103-run loss in the fourth one-dayer here on Monday.”I remember telling myself: ‘Hey, here is this batsman who I watch thrash international bowlers all over the world on television. If I can pick him, I can play international cricket’.””It was also a game where I took Virender Sehwag’s catch. The man just stood in the middle and didn’t want to leave the pitch. I ran around the stadium in celebration.”A fire-fighter by profession, Martin’s story is one of triumph over adversity as a debilitating injury once almost finished his budding career.”I represented Leeward Islands in under-15 cricket as a paceman in 1998. But then I suffered a serious injury and damaged my back.”Since I love this game so much, I started bowling off breaks. Now my Antigua Under-19 coach told me the team has two good off-spinners. So I turn to leg-spin. I always used to bowl a couple of deliveries of leg-spin in the nets as a sort of warm-up. I knew something about it so started working on it.”advertisementMartin said he was motivated to do well after he wasn’t picked up in the third match on Saturday.”It motivated me. I went to the hotel and thought ‘hey, my coach doesn’t think I am fit to play. I am gonna show’.Trinidad was slow. But Antigua is my pitch. Nobody destroys me here,” he said.”Nobody comes here and destroys me in my house. I didn’t want the whitewash. Losing is not a word in my vocabulary.Like my uncle who is my mentor, I don’t tolerate crap. I am always serious. I don’t crack jokes in the middle,” he added.Martin is mindful that in a land which is known for its fast bowlers — Andy Roberts, Curtly Ambrose, Winston Benjamin etc — he is the first spinner to make his mark.”Yes, I am here to make a difference.”Martin owes a lot to his mother and said the mere mention of her makes him feel like shedding tears.”I feel like shedding tears for her. She has done a lot for me, always supported me. She was today sitting in the stands with my daughter.”He has done well in cricket, but Martin still feels that his job as a fire-fighter is a priority.”I sometimes have to handle fire-fighting. Otherwise I do regular police work. Whatever I am told to do I do. If they want me to leave cricket, I would do so. It’s my job,” he said.- With inputs from PTIlast_img read more

India Today @ Olympics: Indian archers need to fire rightaway

| dhbjnujjr

first_imgLord’s is referred to as the Mecca of cricket. However, in the next fortnight, this venue will be used for the Olympic archery event where the Indians are in full strength this time.If one delves into the history of Lord’s and how the Indian cricketers have performed, you can recall several amazing stories. Someone like Dilip Vengsarkar slammed three successive Test centuries there and that was quite a record. Now is not the time to talk of cricket, but archery at Lord’s. Even as the English cricket team is being whacked by the South Africans in a home series, Lord’s will be on focus from the Indian point of view because of a certain Deepika Kumari, the world No.1 archer. There is no doubt, in recent times none other than Deepika has made archery as a sport so popular at home thanks to her exploits in the international arena.Young and precocious, Deepika is aware that after a solid showing lasting several months now, the nation looks up to her as a medal prospect. In the good old days, when Limba Ram was the face of Indian archery, Deepika was not even born. However, just as a couple of big wins catapult you into stardom, Deepika has become the poster girl of Indian archery. It’s a tag which is nice to wear but comes with plenty of headaches. When you are hyped as the No.1 in the world, there is a lot of pressure associated with it.And as this happens to be her maiden Olympics, the young girl from Jharkhand has to keep her head on her shoulders. Conditions at Lord’s are not easy. In true British weather, when the cricket ball moves in the air, you can well imagine what the challenges are for an archer to shoot straight at the target. No doubt, Deepika and her teammates Laishram Bombayla Devi and Chekrovolu Swuro have got sufficient practice at a historic venue. The big challenge starts on Friday where even before the opening ceremony there will be a preliminary ranking round for the 64 archers. For the men archers – Rahul Banerjee, Tarundeep Rai and Jayanta Talukdar – as well, this is a big challenge. The stock of Indian archery has gone up in recent times and the maximum possible qualification number has qualified.Training camps in Kolkata before coming to India and practice in Lord’s won’t mean much as the real pressure is on Friday. Unless you do well spot on from the time you shoot the first arrow, nothing can be taken for granted. The main competition for the Indians will come from South Korea in the men’s and women’s individual and team events. Not to be left behind are the archers from France and the United States of America.Manager Paresh Mukherjee was guarded on the eve of the archery competition. “We have prepared hard and hope to do well rightaway,” said Mukherejee. Before leaving for London, Deepika had told the media: “I am not going to London just to compete. I want to do well.”The time has come for the bundle of talent to show the world she stands tall in a sport where accuracy, precision and cool nerves are so important.advertisementlast_img read more

Their scores were 21-11 and 21-17. Xu and Ma snatched the silver, reports Xinhua. It is the first time China bagged both the gold and the silver medals of the event at the Olympics.Zhanga-Zhao, the World No. 1 seed, dominated the court from the beginning, while their rivals made more mistakes. Pakistan hope to bury ghosts of 2007

first_imgAn unpredictable Pakistan will be desperateto shed their runners-up tag by pulling off a win against a rampagingSri Lanka when the two teams meet in the Twenty20 World Cup final atthe Lord’s on Sunday. Pakistan, who lost the Cup by a whisker to India in the inauguraledition in South Africa, have played little international cricket sincethen because of political turmoil back home and would be eager to winthe honour in a bid to bring the sport back on track in their country. But captain Younis Khan is aware that the job at hand is not atall an easy one as primarily his team has not been a consistent side inthe tournament so far and secondly Sri Lanka go into the final with aclean slate. The ease with which Kumara Sangakkara’s men thrashed the WestIndies in yesterday’s semi-final at the Oval should also be a matter ofconcern for Younis Khan. Pakistan have called up ex-ICL player Abdul Razzaq as areplacement for an injured Yasir Arafat and his presence, strengthensthe side as the all rounder is a hard-hitting batsman and a bowler withdecent pace. Return of another all rounder Shahid Afridi to form just at theright time with a 34-ball 51 in their semifinal against South Africa isalso a good news for Pakistan, who would not want to be on the losingside for third time in a World Cup.last_img read more

Experienced members of Team India failed to deliver at ICC World Twenty20

first_imgVirender Sehwag played just three matches in the World Twenty20, scored 54 runs at a strike rate of 112.50, and celebrated a South African wicket so hard that he ended up straining a ligament in his left ankle and putting himself out of action for at least two weeks, according to a team statement.Just before that, AB de Villiers had knocked the ball backward of square leg, and Sehwag, who was to the left of the umpire, had given chase for about 10-15 yards. In that time, the batsmen had crossed for two. These are but two examples of why Sehwag seems to have outlived his utility as a Twenty20 player. He has, by-and-large, flopped as a T20 batsman, and by the next World T20 in Bangladesh two years hence, Sehwag will be pushing 36.His conditioning, never a strong point, won’t be getting any better. The same is true for Zaheer Khan. In four matches, he bowled 13 overs, took three wickets and his economy rate was 7.23. He was a liability in the field too, and even in the practice sessions, could be seen walking around gingerly. That means India were virtually down to a seven-man fielding unit at times, which in the shortest format, can prove detrimental in shifting the momentum of the game.Harbhajan Singh was picked for the World T20 on reputation alone. After bamboozling the England batsman, the Punjab off-spinner was brought down to earth when Aussie batsman David Warner took to him in the next game.Figures of 2-0-20-0 meant he was discarded for the remaining two matches of India’s campaign. Yuvraj Singh was brought back on sentiment after the left-hander won his battle with cancer.advertisementBut it was clear he was not in shape for top-level cricket. His batting looked rusty and he pulled his weight with his bowling alone, which found assistance from Lankan pitches.Gautam Gambhir has been short of runs and confidence for so long that it is not funny. He also has found favourite ways of getting out- either inside edging on to the stumps or hanging his bat out to dry and giving catching practice to the wicketkeeper and the slip cordon. His fielding, too, is not much to write home about. MS Dhoni was defensive when asked about a possible overhaul.”This question is always asked when we don’t do well. When we lost in Australia and England, similar questions were asked. Let’s get real. We performed well in the tournament and we lost just one match,” he said. But with the turnaround time between world events being just two years instead of four for the ODI World Cup, and the limited number of international games, now is the time to blood youngsters and let them find their feet before they face the acid test. There is no dearth of claimants for opening slots, even if Ajinkya Rahane isn’t considered because of strike rate issues. There are attacking openers like Delhi pair Shikhar Dhawan and Unmukt Chand, to just name two, who could be useful as replacements. In Zaheer’s case, the obvious replacement would be Umesh Yadav, who will only grow as a bowler the more he plays. Currently, he doesn’t enjoy the captain’s confidence, given his knack for spraying the ball at his express pace, but the fast bowling cupboard is largely bare.Ever since India’s World Cup triumph, the older brigade has clearly been on the wane across all formats, but such is their aura that nobody seems to be able to summon up the courage and give them the golden handshake.Still, it won’t be too much of a stretch to imagine that this could be the last outing in a T20 International for some of them.last_img read more

first_imgDunks, layups, 3-pointers and little else. That was the playsheet for the Rising Stars game Friday night, one where Kuzma led all scorers with 35 points on the way to MVP honors and the U.S. team defeated the World squad 161-144 on the floor that the All-Stars will be using on Sunday night.Tatum added 30 points for the U.S. The teams combined for 37 3-pointers, 55 dunks and shot a combined 12 free throws.FEATURED STORIESSPORTSPrivate companies step in to help SEA Games hostingSPORTSUrgent reply from Philippine ‍football chiefSPORTSPalace wants Cayetano’s PHISGOC Foundation probed over corruption charges“Last year, the World team kicked our butts,” Kuzma said. “They came in here and beat us by 30. Both teams shot 55 percent. The difference was on 3s — the U.S. was 21 for 51, while the World was 16 for 52.The mood from the outset was predictably light, even including the pregame speeches from U.S. coach Kyrie Irving of the Boston Celtics and World coach Dirk Nowitzki of the Dallas Mavericks.“I want us to share the ball and not one guy dribble it 20 times and hoist something up — like Luka does with the Mavs,” Nowitzki said, laughing a bit at his own joke.Irving’s message was succinct.“Just have some fun,” Irving said. “It’s OK to compete.”Doncic talked Phoenix’s DeAndre Ayton out of taking the opening tap for the World team, with the young Mavs star jumping against Fox instead of having either center handle the honors. Young was throwing an alley-oop lob to Atlanta teammate John Collins for a 360-degree dunk in one possession, then crossing over Josh Okogie in almost comical fashion on the next.“We gotta play some defense,” Mitchell implored teammates at one point. It was unclear if anyone ever actually listened to his plea. There was one foul called in the entire first half, Markkanen getting whistled for it with 4:13 remaining until halftime. The first half saw 25 dunks and 20 3-pointers in 20 minutes — the sides played 10-minute quarters. Late in the half, Collins flashed a crossover dribble, then underhand-tossed a pass off the backboard to himself for a dunk that had players on both sides reacting in mock disbelief.FORMAT Private companies step in to help SEA Games hosting Grace Poe files bill to protect govt teachers from malicious accusations This was the fifth year of the U.S. vs. World format; the World now leads the all-time series, 3-2.All 10 players on the World team hailed from a different nation, and four different continents were represented. Photo: PTIKings XI Punjab put up yet another dominating performance as they outclassed Northern Knights from New Zealand by a whopping 120 runs to enter the semi-finals in their maiden appearance in the Champions League T20, in Mohali on Friday night.Put into bat, Kings XI Punjab put up a massive 215 for five, courtesy blazing half-centuries from openers Manan Vohra (65 off 32 balls) and veteran Virender Sehwag (52 off 37 balls) and century opening stand between them.In reply, Northern Knights started off well in Powerplay overs before their chase ran out of steam to be skittled out for paltry 95 in 15.2 overs.KXIP with three wins from as many matches now have 12 points to their credit and have clinched a place in the semi-finals with four other teams fighting for the other three spots. The ‘Pink Panthers’ from New Zealand, who had done well at the start of the tournament, found it difficult to handle the young spin duo of leg-spinner Karanveer Singh (4/15 in 3.2 overs) and left-arm spinner Akshar Patel (2/16 in 4 overs) during the middle overs. In the eight overs bowled between them, they snared six wickets with only 31 runs being conceded in 7.2 overs.Once batting mainstay Kane Williamson (20) was caught Wriddhiman Saha off Thisara Perera and Akshar got Anton Devcich (28) caught by Karanveer, there was no way that Knights would have chased the target.KXIP were brilliant in the field with Glenn Maxwell and Saha effecting couple of brilliant run-outs.advertisementlast_img read more
