first_imgSEATTLE — Stony Brook traveled a long way for a huge victory.Jameel Warney banked in a short runner with 30 seconds left to give Stony Brook its first lead, and the Long Island university overcame a 16-point deficit to stun No. 13 Washington 62-57 on the night of Dec. 28.“This is our biggest win in program history,” said Warney, who scored over Robert Upshaw, the nation’s leading shot blocker. It’s only the second win ever against a team from a power conference for the America East school, which knocked off Penn State in 2006.After Stony Brook trailed by as much as 16, Carson Puriefoy hit a 3-pointer from the left wing with 1:07 left to pull the Seawolves even at 57.“I’m a confident player, I know I can make shots, big shots,” said Puriefoy, who went 2 of 12 from the field. “I love to take the big shot, but I’m really glad I have great teammates around me (to) pick up the slack throughout the game.”Stony Brook (8-6) finished on a 17-2 run, holding Washington scoreless during the final 3:41. The Huskies (11-1) responded to Puriefoy’s tying shot with a turnover and then completely missed the hoop on their attempt following Warney’s go-ahead bucket.Warney finished with 15 points, and Kameron Mitchell added 12 on 4-of-5 shooting from 3-point range.Stony Brook overcame a poor shooting performance in the first half when it shot 2-of-9 from beyond the arc. The Seawolves started 3 for 15 from the floor and didn’t hit a 3-pointer until their sixth attempt.“I thought we were getting decent looks,” coach Steve Pikiell said. “Certainly, in a game like this against a great team, you’re not going to get a lot better. I love their defense, I think they’re real good defensively, so I told our guys, you got to take the first one that becomes available.”The Huskies, who were looking to get off to their best start ever under 13th-year coach Lorenzo Romar, had a double-digit lead for much of the night.Nigel Williams-Goss scored six straight points early in the second half to spark an 8-0 run that gave Washington a 47-31 lead. Stony Brook answered with a 9-2 run to stay in the game.Upshaw had 10 points, 11 rebounds and four blocks for Washington. Williams-Goss also scored 10 points.“Mentally, we just weren’t there,” Romar said. “And with so much at stake, you wonder why not. Obviously, me as the head coach, should have had our guys better prepared to go out and finish this up, but I didn’t do a good enough job, obviously.(JOSH LIEBESKIND)TweetPinShare0 Shareslast_img read more

Cong starts informal talks for new party president selection

| stvimrwvz

first_imgNew Delhi: Senior leaders of Congress party have started informal consultation among their other leaders to build a consensus on an “interim president” of the party.A senior Congress Working Committee member informed that within the next 10 days the name of a new president would be announced. There was serious confusion within the party that once the Congress president resigns, then whole CWC gets dissolved automatically. Therefore, the legitimacy of calling a CWC might not be proper according to the constitution of the party. Later they came to the conclusion that once the consensus arrives on a new name, AICC general secretary in-charge of the organisation could convene an urgent CWC to appoint an interim president. Also Read – How a psychopath killer hid behind the mask of a devout laity! The leader also clarified that newly-nominated interim president would announce the schedule of the election of Congress president. It might take at least three months to complete the process. Once a full-time Congress president is elected through organisational poll, AICC plenary has to be convened and the election has to be ratified. Newly-appointed interim president would appoint CWC who in turn would approve their president. There is also a question whether new president once elected can have a full tenure of five years as the party constitution has it that he or she will complete only residual term of Rahul Gandhi as he has completed only one-year tenure as Congress chief. Also Read – Encounter under way in Pulwama, militant killedRecently, some of the senior Congress leaders met Congress Parliamentary Party Chairman Sonia Gandhi and enquired about the basic criteria of a new Congress president. According to a senior party leader, Gandhi’s choice would be an energetic and middle-aged person. She has also indicated that Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot is not in the race as he wants to continue as CM only. It has also been clarified that senior leader Motilal Vora has not been appointed as interim president of the party. The senior leader also hinted that the party would consult not only CWC members but also senior leaders of different states. From Friday, a group of leaders would start consultation among themselves first.last_img read more

first_imgBURNABY, B.C. – Police say they have identified more than 90 persons of interest involving the homicide investigation of a 13-year-old girl found dead in a suburban Vancouver park.Marrisa Shen’s body was discovered in some brush at Central Park in Burnaby on July 19, and police say they have narrowed a timeline and provided investigators with her whereabouts on the previous day.Shen was last seen on the south side of Central Boulevard at 7:38 p.m. on July 18.Police say nearly 200 tips have come in and they’ve collected video footage covering thousands of hours from more than 60 places. It’s being reviewed by investigators with the Integrated Homicide Investigation Team and the RCMP.Police are asking the public and the media to provide video footage from a vigil in Central Park on July 22 and from Shen’s funeral on July 28.Cpl. Meghan Foster told a news conference police do not know whether a suspect would have attended the events.“This case has drawn attention nationwide and because of the attention it’s drawn it’s something we’d be remiss not to ask for,” she said.Police are also asking people to forward any video or photos taken in the area the day Shen died.“Marrisa Shen did frequent the park and she was like any kid, she went to Tim Horton’s and enjoyed coffee. To offer what her routine was and whether or not that played a part in the events leading up to her death right now is speculation,” Foster said. She said police believe the homicide happened in Central Park and it’s still considered random.Shen was to start high school next month. Police have not said how she died.Police patrolled Central Park on bicycles and on foot after Shen’s body was found and residents were asked to stay vigilant about their personal safety.last_img read more

UN staff around the world gather in remembrance of 2003 Baghdad attack

| stvimrwvz

17 August 2007United Nations staff members across the globe today solemnly commemorated the fourth anniversary of the bombing at Baghdad’s Canal Hotel, where nearly two dozen people were killed and scores more injured in the deadliest attack against the world body’s civilian personnel in history. In Addis Ababa, Baghdad, Bangkok, Geneva, Nairobi, New York, Santiago, Vienna and other locations, staff members gathered in remembrance of the 19 August 2003 truck bomb attack against the UN headquarters in Baghdad, which took the lives of 22 and wounded more than 150. Among those killed was Sergio Vieira de Mello, the Secretary-General’s Special Representative for Iraq and head of the UN mission in the country.A UN spokesperson, stressing that the Organization has “vigorously pursued the coordination of an accurate account of the tragic crime,” said all elements of that account are now complete. The UN will share the account as soon as possible with the families of victims and other concerned parties, Michele Montas said. “This was the first time the United Nations was deliberately targeted on such a massive scale,” Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon said at the UN Headquarters ceremony. “The bomb detonated at our Baghdad headquarters robbed us of our best and brightest and injured many more, but it also shattered any illusion that the UN’s ideals and impartiality permitted us to operate above the fray in Iraq.”The Security Council’s recent decision to strengthen the mandate of the UN mission in Iraq “is an opportunity to carry forward the work of Sergio Vieira de Mello and his colleagues,” the Secretary-General said, adding that he understood the “fears and concerns” of staff members about the move.“Any such measure remains strictly subject to conditions on the ground,” he stressed. “Your safety is and always will be a paramount concern.”“At the same time, the terrorists who struck so cruelly in Baghdad must, one day, be brought to justice,” he said, standing before a memorial to the victims and a frame holding the tattered UN flag which survived the bombing. “There can be no impunity for such murderers.”The Secretary-General said his thoughts are with the survivors of the Baghdad bombing, and the families of those who died, and also paid tribute “to the brave men and women who continue to serve the United Nations, in Iraq and beyond.”UN staff members around the world gathered and observed a minute of silence to honour the memory of the victims. Wreath-laying ceremonies were held in Geneva and New York, while staff in Santiago held a candle-lighting ceremony. At the Geneva ceremony, the Director-General of the UN Office there, Sergei A. Ordzhonikidze, stressed that time only strengthens the resolve to ensure that the lives and contributions of those who perished were not forgotten. “We vow to take forward their quest for peace as the most appropriate tribute to their memory,” he said, adding that by “building on their legacy, we continue to assist the Iraqi people.”Mr. Ordzhonikidze said the adoption last week of Security Council Resolution 1770 to renew and strengthen the mandate of the UN Assistance Mission for Iraq (UNAMI) “demonstrates the Organization’s unwavering commitment to helping the Iraqi people to shape a prosperous and peaceful future.” He paid tribute to the victims’ deep sense of commitment to the noble cause of peace and to the service of who needed them the most. “Let us all be inspired – not just today, but every day – by their drive and dedication, by their sense of responsibility, by their steadfast belief in the values and principles of this Organization, and by their determination and ability to act upon this belief.” In Nairobi, 100 staff members gathered outside the main entrance of the Sergio Vieira de Mello Library located in the UN headquarters complex for a commemorative ceremony.Achim Steiner, the Executive Director of the UN Environment Programme (UNEP) and acting Director-General of the UN Office at Nairobi, read the Secretary-General’s message before the minute of silence was observed.Following a speech by the President of the Staff Union, Michael Mwangi, Eric Falt, the Director of the UN Information Centre in Nairobi, which organized the ceremony, requested that staff who had been given single-stem flowers place them in the Pond of Remembrance located just off the main entrance of the library. The Sergio Vieira de Mello Library is but one of several lasting tributes to the victims of the bombing. Officials from the American University in Cairo (AUC) set up the Nadia Younes Memorial Fund, which honours the legacy of the late Egyptian UN staffer who was killed in the attack by supporting education and opportunity for students.Among its projects, the Fund has supported the Nadia Younes Conference and Meeting Room at AUC’s Model United Nations Centre, the Nadia Younes Annual Lecture, and the Nadia Younes Award for Public and Humanitarian Service.Jean-Selim Kanaan, a national of Egypt and France who was among the victims, was awarded France’s Legion of Honour for his work in helping the world’s weak and oppressed, while the UN renamed annual training programme for young journalists in honour of Reham Al-Farra, the first female daily political columnist in her native Jordan who was also killed in the Baghdad blast. In addition to these four individuals, various tributes have also been paid to each of the other victims: Emaad Ahmed Salman Al-Jobory, Raid Shaker Mustafa Al-Mahdawi Leen Assad Al-Quadi, Ranilo Buenaventura, Rick Hooper, Reza Hosseini, Ihssan Taha Husain, Christopher Klein-Beekman, Martha Teas, Basim Mahmood Utaiwi, Fiona Watson, Saad Hermiz Abona, Omar Kahtan Mohamed Al-Orfali, Gillian Clark, Arthur Helton, Manuel Martín-Oar, Khidir Saleem Sahir and Alya Ahmad Sousa. read more

Turquoise Hill Resources hit with US classaction suit accusing it of misleading

VANCOUVER — A class action lawsuit that accuses Turquoise Hill Resources (TSX:TRQ) of misleading investors over a 3 1/2-year period has been filed in a U.S. district court in New York City. The law firm Levi and Korsinsky filed the case on behalf of those who bought shares in the company between May 14, 2010 and Nov. 8, 2013.The case alleges that the mining company made false and or misleading statements regarding its financial performance and business prospects and overstated its revenue. The allegations, filed in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York, have not been proven in court.Turquoise Hill said in November it would restate its results for the years ended Dec. 31, 2010, 2011, and 2012, as well as the affected quarterly financial results following a decision by its majority-owned subsidiary SouthGobi Resources to restate its results. The SouthGobi restatement was due to a change in determination of when revenue should be recognized according to international accounting standards. The Levi and Korsinsky lawsuit is the second case filed against Turquoise Hill in recent weeks.Another case was filed earlier in December by Robbins, Geller, Rudman and Dowd that also accused Turquoise Hill of “materially false and misleading statements” regarding its financial performance. In response to that case, Turquoise Hill said the lawsuit was “without merit” and pledged to “vigorously defend against it.”Turquoise Hill is developing the Oyu Tolgoi copper mining complex in Mongolia, including an open pit mine that began production this year and an underground portion under development. read more

The Council’s meeting, scheduled for 11:30 a.m., will be held behind closed doors and is expected to review the latest developments in the DRC, where ongoing fighting is complicating UN efforts to improve stability and deliver aid to the country’s beleaguered people. On Friday, Secretary-General Kofi Annan urged all warring parties in the eastern DRC to cooperate unconditionally in the release of two UN military observers who had been abducted in the town of Beni.Meanwhile, up to 200,000 people have reportedly fled from towns in North Kivu ahead of the latest offensive by the Rassemblement Congolais pour la Démocratie (RCD-Goma). UN agencies and non-governmental organizations have been evacuating staff from Beni and Butembo, warning that if the offensive continues, more people will flee, exhausting the capacity of relief agencies to adequately respond to burgeoning humanitarian needs. read more

What Greeks think of the referendum wording as crucial Sunday vote on

by Gregory Katz And Theodora Mavropoulos, The Associated Press Posted Jul 3, 2015 11:07 am MDT Last Updated Jul 3, 2015 at 2:40 pm MDT AddThis Sharing ButtonsShare to TwitterTwitterShare to FacebookFacebookShare to RedditRedditShare to 電子郵件Email ATHENS, Greece – Greek voters facing a momentous vote Sunday that may determine the country’s future in Europe can be forgiven for scratching their heads when they read the ballot question that has to be marked with a “yes” or a “no.”The question does not address the future of the euro currency — which many believe is at stake — or the future of Greece’s relationship with the 28-nation European Union.Instead, it asks the following:“Should the plan of agreement, which was submitted by the European Commission, the European Central Bank and the International Monetary Fund in the Eurogroup of 25.06.2015 and is comprised of two parts that constitute their unified proposal be accepted? The first document is entitled “Reforms For The Completion Of The Current Program And Beyond” and the second “Preliminary Debt Sustainability Analysis.”To complicate matters, the offer being voted on is no longer on the table, having been linked to a bailout package that expired earlier this week, and it is clear that many Greeks have not read the complex documents referred to.Critics point out that many people in rural villages with little or no Internet access will not find an easy way to access the documents. Others without special training may find them overly technical and difficult to comprehend. One person with training, a 21-year-old law student, said she understood the question and had studied the supporting documents, including the tax sections, before deciding to vote “no.” She said Greeks comprehend that the referendum is not just about the matters spelled out on the ballot, but deal with the broader issue of how European Union policy has shaped Greece during the austerity era.So do most people understand the ballot question? Here is a sampling of responses when the question was read to citizens Friday:___I UNDERSTAND BUT IT’S STILL CONFUSINGYanis Koutzouvelis, 19: “I understand the question in general but the question is not clear because we don’t know the consequences of voting ‘no’ and we don’t know if it means going out of the eurozone. I mean I don’t know in the end if the ‘yes’ or the ‘no’ is in reference to the drachma (Greek’s former national currency) or not. I will look at a lot of television and radio news but it’s super-difficult to understand what it really means.”___THE QUESTION IS MISLEADINGAndreas Simeou, 56: “With that question the government misleads the people. It’s not the fault of the Greek people. Now the government is giving the whole weight to the people and it always says it’s someone else’s fault that everything is a mess here.”___GREEKS UNDERSTAND WHAT’S AT STAKEMaria Gaspariatou, 42: “No one really cares what’s written on the ballot and what the ‘yes’ and ‘no’ means. They really know what it means from their lives. Like my grandmother, my granddad, my parents who are pensioners, they really know why they have to vote ‘no.’ The people understand that the whole last five years it was poverty and now we have to decide for ourselves. We have very difficult times and the Greek people know that. And they are ready go through that and have a better future.”____THE TV TOLD ME WHAT IT MEANSMaria Koleti, 57: “It’s only difficult for the people to understand if they are silly. There was so much analysis on the TV and in the newspapers explaining the ‘yes’ and the ‘no’ so no one has problems understanding what the ‘yes’ and the ‘no’ means on the ballot. The only people who don’t understand are those who don’t want to understand. We know what it means.”____DON’T ASK ME, I DIDN’T STUDY ECONOMICSStratos Harvis, 46: “I’m not so informed and not so into that stuff so for me it’s difficult to understand that question. But the last years in Greece it was very difficult for the people, so I would vote ‘no’. It’s tricky for someone who’s not involved, the questions are tricky because the way they are written a lot of people won’t understand. You have to have studied economics.”____IT’S OBVIOUSKaterina Bakola, 46, laughing as she heard the text of the question: “I don’t think the way it is posed is difficult to understand. For me the question was obvious. At least I understand the questions and I think all the people understand.” What Greeks think of the referendum wording as crucial Sunday vote on future with Europe nears read more

The production increases are balanced with new fuel saving strategies that include configurable economy settings as well as an adaptive economy mode that automatically optimises fuel consumption based on the user’s production baseline.”Fuel savings also are realised behind the scenes through features such as auto neutral idle and APECS transmission controls where the truck becomes more fuel efficient at idle in a forward gear and when climbing grades. Customers can choose to engage features like Engine Idle Shutdown and speed limiting to further improve fuel savings. In addition to its fuel efficiency, the 777G is quieter and produces fewer emissions. Caterpillar is introducing its EPA Tier 4 Final solution on the 777G two years in advance of the effective date of the regulation, which provides customers an opportunity to advance their sustainability goals. The solution is both simple and robust and includes engine technology combined with diesel oxidation catalysts. It requires the use of ultra low sulphur diesel fuel and low ash engine oil, but requires no additional maintenance or operator input.  For operations outside of areas regulated by the US EPA, the 777G reduces emissions with a Tier 2 or EU Stage II equivalent technology and fuel efficiency.Caterpillar has also enhanced braking and traction control for G Series. Hydraulic oil-immersed disc brakes are now standard on all four corners of the truck. The system design increases slope holding capability and provides fade resistant, responsive braking performance. Design updates extend brake component life by increasing the force used to disengage the brakes. The optional Cat engine brake can extend service brake life and integrates with Automatic Retarder Control, enabling fast downhill travel and reduced cycle times. The new parking brake system actuates the front brakes as well as the rear for solidly holding the truck on a slope. In addition to brake performance updates, the traction control system on the 777G is now able to differentiate between tire spin and high speed turns so it now can activate at lower speeds. The system now uses the hydraulically applied service brakes for improved response time and modulation from one wheel group to the other. The 777G also features new designs to enhance the safety and comfort of operators and maintenance personnel.Object Detection comes as standard on the 777G. Using a combination of radars, an in-cab display and multiple cameras, Object Detection provides equipment operators with enhanced awareness for increased site safety. The 777G also offers tyre monitoring through use of payload values from the Truck Production Monitoring System and data such as air temperature and truck speed to calculate the load placed on tyres. As tyres approach their rated load-speed rating, a warning is given and customers can choose a course of action, including slowing down or reducing payload. The 777G also introduces the next generation of transmission control strategies from Caterpillar. Advanced Productivity Electronic Control Strategy or APECS provides greater productivity at better fuel rates with torque shift management that allows the truck to carry more momentum up grades. Drive train durability profits from next generation electronic clutch pressure control, and APECS further provides outstanding shift quality for a smooth ride.last_img read more
